This
impressive canyon, up to 400m deep in places, lies between Alora and
Ardales, 58km north-west of Malaga. It was created by the Guadalhorce
river as it tumbles through the ravine. The railway passes through using
a series of tunnels and offering wonderful views but the best way to
explore is by car. There are 3 man-made lakes above the gorge with
beaches and facilities for fishing. There are no first-class hotels here
but there are cottages to rent, camping and a finca offering cheap
accommodation. The area attracts those who want adventure during their
holiday. There is rock-climbing, hiking, caving and mountain biking. You
can take your own bike or rent one for around 1 euro a day. It can be
reached by train from the railway station in Malaga (RENFE), and
travelling to Alora. An infrequent bus service operates from there but
taxis are available. Coach excursions can be booked in Benalmadena and
Arroyo de la Miel.
